The cost of a custom art toy depends on more than size. Sculpt complexity, material, tooling, paint operations, articulation, accessories, packaging, and quantity all affect the final quote.
Setup cost and unit cost are different
Setup cost covers work like sculpting, prototyping, mold making, paint masters, and samples. Unit cost covers each figure produced after the setup is ready. A quote should separate these clearly.
Complexity drives cost
A small figure with many tiny accessories, translucent parts, or complex paint masks can cost more than a larger simple figure. Every part, color, joint, and finish adds production steps.
Molds are a major investment
Tooling is often one of the largest upfront costs. The number of molds depends on part count, material, production method, and the level of detail in the figure.
Quantity changes the math
Higher quantities usually reduce unit cost because setup costs are spread over more pieces. That does not mean a large run is always smarter; inventory risk still matters.
Packaging is part of the product
Boxes, blister packs, header cards, inserts, labels, cartons, and shipping protection can materially affect the budget. Add packaging before you finalize retail pricing.
