A 200 to 500 piece run is a sweet spot for many artists. It is large enough to feel like a real edition but small enough to control inventory, cash flow, and collector demand.
Validate demand before production
Use waitlists, preorder windows, collector polls, convention interest, and social proof before committing. A figure run should be tied to a launch plan, not only a quote.
Keep the first edition focused
The first production run should prove the character. Avoid too many accessories, extreme paint effects, or multiple packages unless those features clearly support sales.
Build cost into your retail price
Your retail price must cover production, packaging, samples, shipping, duties, platform fees, damaged units, marketing, and your margin. Artists often underprice the first run because they only look at the factory unit cost.
Use prototypes as marketing assets
Prototype photos, sculpt previews, paint master updates, and production progress all help build collector confidence before release.
Plan the next colorway
If the first run performs well, the same sculpt can support new colorways or editions. This can make future launches faster because some development work is already complete.
Quick Checklist
- Keep the sculpt production-friendly.
- Quote several quantity tiers.
- Use a preorder or waitlist.
- Photograph each milestone for launch content.
